Announcing Croydon’s Best Independent Café Awards 2016
They’re back! And this year the Croydon Best Independent Café Awards are even bigger. Why? Because this year, YOU decide the shortlist for the best independent cafés in the borough and you vote to decide the winner – the ultimate accolade, Croydon’s Best Independent Café for 2016, the People’s Choice.
Here’s how it works. Nominate your favourite café in the borough by Friday 28th October in any of the following ways:
Email: firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line Best Croydon Café
Tweet: @CroydonCit with the hashtag #BestCroydonCafé
Post: Citizen Newspapers Ltd, Sussex Innovation Croydon
11th Floor, No.1 Croydon, 12-16 Addiscombe Road
Croydon, Greater London CR0 0XT
Who can you nominate?
You can nominate any independent café in the borough that is not part of a chain – sorry, big brands, but you get quite enough attention through your big marketing budgets. We want to celebrate the small local guys that are providing great community hubs for people to meet and hang out, drink good coffee and eat tasty cake. Yes, we’re particularly interested in hearing about places that have good cake…
Remember, it’s up to you to shout about your local area and tell us about the places that are doing good work in the very important area of coffee and socialising. Last year the People’s Choice attracted a huge number of votes for the winner, Café Adagio in Addiscombe, closely followed by the Tram Stop also in Addiscombe. E-bears’ Attic Tea Shop in Hamsey topped the poll to win the Judges’ Award. So… do you want Addiscombe to get all the glory this year? And what about the new places that have opened up since our 2016 Awards?
Have a read through last year’s reviews to remind yourself of all those great cafés we have in the borough. From Purley to Thornton Heath, South Norwood to Coulsdon, there are lots of great places to enjoy Croydon’s café culture.
What’s the Judges’ Award?
As well as voting for the People’s Choice Award, a group of us will be getting together to visit all of the cafés on the shortlist and choosing a winner. Anyone can join the judges’ panel and we’ll let you know how to get involved before the judging starts. All you have to do is devote a couple of hours on a Saturday to visiting a café or two along with the group. You don’t need to visit all of the cafés, just as many as you can – or want to. It’s a great way to meet new people in Croydon and bond over coffee and cake. You can even drink tea if you like – we’re very open to trying new things. (Sorry, cake is a definite requirement. But you can just have a nibble. Sharing is allowed).
What happens next?
We’ll announce the shortlist in early November and you’ll be able to vote for your favourite through an online poll. The judging panel will also visit all of the shortlisted cafés from early November, and all voting will close at the end of December. Then in January, we’ll announce the winners of Croydon’s Best Independent Café for 2016 – People’s Choice and Judges’ Awards.
It’s time to stand up and have your favourite café recognized. Let the nominations begin…
