Thornton Heath hotel given permission to build underground rooms

The Dunheved Hotel, on London Road, already has 60 bedrooms but plans to expand due to its popularity.

A hotel in Thornton Heath has been given the go-ahead to build more basement rooms.

The Dunheved Hotel plans on excavating ground underneath its car park to make way for a two-storey extension.

A planning statement says the “successful hotel” has been open in London Road for more than 30 years.

It currently has 60 bedrooms spread over four storeys and an existing basement.

In 2013, the hotel was given permission for a three-storey plus basement extension which increased the number of rooms by 23.

The application states: “The proposed development will deliver high-quality hotel accommodation which will contribute to the wider demand for guest accommodation in the London Borough of Croydon.

“This planning application has been submitted on the basis that a significant and continued demand exists for hotel accommodation in this location, evidenced by the hotel being in situ at the site for more than 30 years.”

It adds that after the work is carried out, the car park will be reinstated with eight spaces instead of the current 10 spaces.

Croydon Council approved the plans last Friday (June 15) subject to a number of conditions.

These include parking layout, noise and air quality assessments before work can take place.
