Legendary Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash wants improvements for Crystal Palace Park’s dinosaurs
The musician has backed an appeal which is trying to raise more than £70,000.
Legendary guitarist Slash has backed an appeal to raise money for improvements so people can take a closer look at the dinosaurs in Crystal Palace Park.
Real name Saul Hudson, the Guns N’ Roses band member has said the dinosaurs, which have been based in the park since the 1850s, have a “special place” in his heart.
The life-sized reconstructions of the extinct beasts are a unique set of sculptures in the park, and are located on islands which members of the public can’t usually get on to. A few times a year, a temporary bridge is erected so park visitors can take a closer look at the dinasaurs.
The Friends of the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, who help maintain the sculptures, are fundraising for a new, permanent bridge, which costs more than £70,000.
Slash, 53, encouraged his 3.6 million Twitter followers on Saturday night (November 24) to help raise money for the project.
“If you feel obliged, please donate to a spot that has always held a special place in my heart,” the musician tweeted, while sharing a link to the page where you can make donations.
Slash has also donated a “very cool” item to The Friends of the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs charity auction, although exactly what that item is will not be revealed until later this week.
Since the guitarist admitted his love for the dinosaurs, some people have taken to social media to react to the revelation.

Twitter user @Hanepem said: “Who knew Slash loved the dinosaurs at CP! I mean who wouldn’t, but the image of him viewing the dinosaurs is epic!”
And user @ianlendler added: “Seriously people, Slash is into the crystal palace dinosaurs. Do you need to know anything more? Support them with a few quid, mate.”
Why does Slash love the dinosaurs in Crystal Palace Park?
Speaking to Reptiles Magazine, Slash said: “I started with the whole reptile, dinosaur and monster fascination as far back as I can remember.
“When I was young and lived in London, I think that one of the biggest thrills that I had was going to Crystal Palace.
“Crystal Palace is a big park, and it had huge, life-size sculptures of dinosaurs. The figures they had, though, were completely anatomically incorrect. I kept going there and looking at the sculptures and was very much into that.”
