Nando’s ‘to open a new restaurant in Croydon’
You could soon have a new choice on where to get your Peri Peri chicken fix.
People in Croydon clearly cannot get enough of Nando’s as the Peri Peri chicken giant is understood to be opening its third restaurant in the borough.
The hugely popular chain is believed to be filling one of the three new units being built at The Colonnades Leisure Park, off Purley Way.
The exciting news comes after McDonald’s announced it will be opening a drive-thru restaurant in one of the units in Spring 2019.
When asked about the other units a, a Croydon Council spokesman told us: “The new phase of development at The Colonnades is to enhance the catering offering, to complement the existing retail and leisure occupiers.
“We understand Nando’s is to open a restaurant alongside the new McDonald’s and advanced discussions are taking place with a restaurant operator for the final unit.”
When we asked Nando’s about the highly anticipated opening, they were not as forthcoming as the council.
A spokeswoman said: “Unfortunately, we don’t have any further info at this stage on this particular restaurant.”
In March 2018 planning permission was granted for the Gipsy Moth pub in the retail park to be bulldozed and replaced with a new two-storey building, which will include space for three new restaurants.
An announcement on the restaurant moving into the final unit is expected in the coming weeks.
A McDonald’s spokesman said this week: “We’re pleased that the planning application for a new restaurant at The Colonnades has been approved, and we look forward to opening the restaurant in spring this year.”
In December 2018 it was announced Croydon Council had shelled out more than £53 million to buy The Colonnades.
The site currently has nine units – including a Nuffield Health gym, a Wickes DIY store, Oxygen freejumping trampoline park and a drive-thru Costa Coffee.
The council is buying the retail park in two phases; the first for the nine existing units and the second, anticipated in May, when the three additional units are finished. The initial sale includes an obligation for the council to commit to buying the second phase.
It is expected the existing McDonald’s at The Colonnades will close once the new branch opens.
Apart from the upcoming McDonald’s drive-thru at The Colonnades, there are also McDonald’s drive-thrus further along the Purley Way in Waddon, another at the Valley Retail and Leisure Park, one on London Road in Thornton Heath and also at The Poppy, on Wickham Road, in Shirley.
Nandos already has restaurants at the Valley Retail and Leisure Park and on High Street, in the town centre.
