Work to replace 1km of Croydon tram tracks mean closures on these weekends

Apparently we’ll be getting a ‘smoother ride’.

More than a kilometre of tram track in Croydon is to be replaced in the coming months – causing sections of the network to be closed while the work is carried out.

Transport for London (TfL) have announced that the work will be spread across five weekends in March and April.

It will be carried out to tram tracks between Addiscombe Road and Blackhorse Lane to provide commuters “with a smoother ride”.

The rest of the tram network will operate as normal.

A spokesman for TfL said: “As part of our regular maintenance programme we are replacing over an kilometre of track between Addiscombe Road and Blackhorse Lane to provide customers with a smoother ride.

“This is major work that will see ballast, sleepers and rails replaced to improve the safety and ride quality of the tram line.”

When will work take place?

TfL have said that work will be carried out over the next five weekends;

  • From midnight, Friday, March 15 to 4am Monday, March 18
  • From midnight Friday, March 22 to 4am Monday, March 25
  • From midnight Friday, March 29 to 4am Monday, April 1
  • From midnight Friday, April 5 to 4am Monday, April 8
  • From midnight Friday, April 12 to 4am Monday, April 15

A spokesman for TfL added: “Work will take place from the end tram service each Friday to the start of tram service each Monday with the rest of the tram network operating as normal.

“Weekends were chosen to minimise the impact on the busier weekdays with our contractors working 24 hours a day to get it completed.”

No trams will run between Sandilands and Birkbeck or Elmers End over the weekends of March 16 to 17 and March 23 to 24.

There will also be no trams between Addiscombe and Birkbeck or Elmers End over the weekend of March 30 to 31.

Throughout the work, replacement buses will run between East Croydon and Birkbeck, and trams will be less frequent on the Wimbledon line and between Birkbeck and Beckenham Junction.
