Work starts on building huge new tower block on Croydon’s Wandle Road car park

You’ve probably seen them on a building site near the flyover.

Work on a 25-storey block of flats overlooking the Croydon Flyover has started.

Last summer, Brick by Brick , the Croydon Council-owned developer, was given the green light to build 128 new homes in the Wandle Road Surface Car Park in the town centre.

Work started on the site last month and the finished building, which will be called Kindred House, is due to be completed in March 2021.

There are currently diggers on the former council-owned car park.

A community newsletter states that the first stage of work involved excavating the site and checking for obstructions.

What will the flats be like?

The block will be made up  of one to three-bedroom flats, with half offered at affordable rents or shared ownership.

Plans for the lower floors include a cafe and gym as well as offices and shops.

There will be 10 disabled parking spaces and secure storage for 214 bikes.

For the residents, there will be a communal roof garden on the 22nd floor.

When the plans were approved last June, Colm Lacey, chief executive of Brick By Brick, said: “We have worked closely with local residents and stakeholders to develop a scheme which makes best use of the site and responds well to its surroundings.”
